Samoa & South See Islands
SamoaThe South Pacific island group of Samoa was split in 1899 between Germany and the United States. The two islands Sawai and Upolu became a German protectorate; they form today the  independent state of Western Samoa. About 1900 Samoa had 37,000 inhabitants and a surface of 2588 km²; the protectorate was administrated from the harbour place Apia. Wilhelm Solf was the first governor; later he became colonial Secretary of State, and during World War I he served temporarily as German foreign minister. The German possession was taken in 1914 by Empire troops, and was later administered by New Zealand.
