In 1884 the northeastern part of the island of New Guinea became a German Protectorate. It contained several other island groups, in particular the Bismarck Archipelago; the total area amounted to about 250,000 km², and the number of the inhabitants was half a million people. The management lay first in the hands of the private German Neuguinea-Compagnie which even had their own coins. In 1899 the German Empire took over and officially named a governor. After the outbreak of World War I the German protectorate was taken by troops of the British Empire; later it became a mandated territory of Australia. |
