In difference to all other German colonial possessions, Kiautschou was a leased territory and administered by the German navy. The area (552 km²) was occupied in 1897 in order to revenge two German missionaries, who had been murdered in China. Within a few years the little village of Tsingtau became a modern city and an important trade center in the Far East. After the beginning of World War I Kiautschou was conquered by Japanese and British troops in spite of heavy German resistance. |
