Although Germany disposed of no colonial traditions and Chancellor Bismarck did'nt want any overseas possessions, some German Protectorates were estabished during the high-level phase of Imperialism since the middle of the 1880s. The main focus lay in Black Africa, but several colonies were also founded in the Pacific area, and a small territory was even leased on the Chinese mainland. After World War I Germany had to surrender all her overseas colonial possessions as a result of the Treaty of Versailles.
