The German East Africa Protectorate existed from 1885 to 1918 and enclosed the areas of the three present republics of Tanzania (without Zanzibar), Rwanda, and Burundi. In this biggest and most populous German Protectorate important medical progress was achieved. During World War I the army out of Germans and Askaris under the command of Paul v. Lettow-Vorbeck successfully resisted against superior enemy forces. On 25.11.1918, that was two weeks after the end of the war, Lettow-Vorbeck surrendered without beeing defeated. |
